Scouting for hunting season?
I was just wondering if anyone scouts the area he or she intends to hunt, before hunting season?
This is going to be my first deer/elk hunting season. Both start in October for centerfire rifles. Bow hunting starts in about a month. I have been studying topography maps of hunting areas, where my general elk tag is good. My goal is to camp there for the whole week of elk season (10/16-10/22).
Should I start scouting the area during bow hunting season, or closer to centerfire season? Bow hunting is August 28-September 26th.
If closer to centerfire season, then how long before the season should I start?
Aside from looking for elk scat, what are some other signs I should look for?
What are the best areas to search (hills, open fields, etc.)?
I live in Southern Oregon and we are heavily forested, with several mountain ranges. To the East of me is the Cascade Range, Diamond Lake, and Crater Lake. My hunting area is to the East, Southeast, and some North- Northeast or the Cascade Range.
Thanks!
Chris> Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately, that area sits just outside of my allowable hunting area. My tag is specific to the Cascade Range for Elk. Next year, I will change it up and put in for a controlled hunt tag too. Just wanted to do the basic, since this was my first year. Thanks though!
