I was wondering if you need a licence to own a rifle(for basic shooting range practice, say .22 rimfire)?
If so, where would I have to go to get it? Any police station? internet? where? Please help. I always read hunting magazines(field & stream, remington, etc) and I would love to own a rifle, maybe become a gun club member. Any pointers?
I reside in NY/Long island.
Also, when buying a .22 rim fire rifle, or any hunting rifle for tha matter, bolt action or semi-auto? pluses, minuses, prefrences?

What other fun things can I send to my soldier husband in Afghanistan to keep in touch? (tasteful answers plz)
Besides little things that he needs, I have sent him so far: the Sunday comics, a homemade crossword puzzle, home video DVDs of our little boy, handmade picture book, funny stories from newspaper, SASEs, hunting magazines. Though he's not the mushy type I've thought about writing an old fashion froofy love letter.

variable hunting scopes?
How come when i read shooting and hunting magazines they always state that hunters even varminters rarely need to use 24x on a 6 to 24 variable? i have a 6 to 24x variable on my .220swift and i always use 24x and never miss rabbits even out to 300 metres and sometimes further. why do they prefer 3 to 9 or 4 to 12 variables over the 6 to 24?
