Texas Style Bow Hunting - Picking The Right Bow And Sticking To The Rules!

For a hunter planning a hunting trip in another state, knowing the rules and regulations is the first step in planning. If Texas is on your list for bow hunting destinations, here are some of the regulations you'll need to know:

• Crossbows are not legal for taking migratory game.

• Only standard archery is legal for bow hunting in Texas and may only be used during general open season.

• Bows and crossbows may not be used to hunt deer in muzzle load season.

• Bows and crossbows are legal for hunting non-game animals that are not protected.

• You must be licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas.

• Firearms are only allowed in camp if they are in your vehicle, or you are hunting any lawful game besides whitetail deer, mule deer, and turkey.

If you are hunting with a longbow, recurve, or compound bow, there are a few regulations to be aware of:

• Bows must have a minimum 40 pound draw for all game besides squirrel.

• Bows with full or partial draw locks are legal during any lawful bow hunting season.

Crossbows may be used when bow hunting in Texas in the following circumstances:

• Crossbows, with or without telescopic sights, may be used to hunt game animals and birds, with the exception of migratory game birds during open seasons, and Eastern spring turkey season.

• Persons with upper limb disabilities, such as the loss of, or the loss of use of, fingers, hands, or arms, may use a crossbow to hunt deer and turkey during Archery Only open season. The person must at all times have in their immediate possession a physician's statement attesting to the extent of their disability.

• A crossbow is legal for game animals and birds, (except migratory game birds), as long as the crossbow has at least 125 pounds of pull, a mechanical safety, and a stock no shorter than 25 inches.

There are also some rules to keep in mind in regards to arrows and crossbow bolts:

• It is unlawful to use poisoned, drugged, or explosive arrows or bolts.

• When hunting any game besides squirrel, a projectile must be equipped with a broadhead hunting point that is at least 7/8" wide upon impact, with at least two cutting edges. A mechanical broadhead should open upon impact and be at least 7/8" wide.

• An archer may have arrows or crossbow bolts with field, target, or judo points with broadhead hunting points in the quiver.

.22 hunting rifle help.?
OK, so I'm 12 years old, starting hunting and the closest thing to a gun I've ever used is a Daisy scoped rifle for cans/paper targets and maybe even a bird if no one was looking. So I no practically nothing about guns except for what I saw on the Military Channel. I need advice from all those small game hunters out there to help me choose out a good, beginner .22 caliber scoped rifle for small game (I'm taking a safety course then buying my license right before my birthday). My budget is about $350 to about $500 if I save up. Thanks, -Blake S. I doesn't necessarily have to have a scope on it because I'll buy a new scope if I have additional money from relatives and friends.

Best choice for my next gun?
I recently purchased a Saiga 12 and converted it myself. I turn 21 soon and am debating between various guns to purchase as my next gun. The spray and pray mentality that comes with a Saiga 12 is fun with targets and skeet but I'm looking for something else to work on skill. I visit our college range weekly to shoot club .22s but it would be nice to have something to practice with at home. So far by hearsay and some research I've come up with this list but am open to suggestions and comments. By the way price is important. I want a nice weapon but things like a Barrett .50 are a little pricey for my age. Current Wishlist: Chinese SKS (heard they were fun to shoot) ***An accurate non-hunting (my family owns many hunting rifles) long range rifle for sport. CZ 75 SP01 Phantom or .45 CZ97 Hi capacity pistols such as one of the Springfield XD series AR-15 1911 ***I have much less knowledge about scoped rifles so best guess might be a Remington 700 or some sort of .308 or .338 Lapua but scopes would probably put this out of my price range. A great rifle would be nice to have for some long distance shooting. Future Wishlist so these are a no for now: semi auto converted lmg such as RPK or a Browning Automatic rifle Bushmaster ACR Desert Eagle Tompson Mos Nagant Luger Barrett .50 cal AK74 or 47 aps amphibious rifle :P Double barrel over under or side by side Revolvers most likely high calibers Dragunov and also maybe some exotic assault rifles or class 3 weapons when money permits I expect to pass on quite a calming hobby for me as well as a decent collection. I know it was a long post but thanks for reading and replying to the post. For a long range rifle I would prefer one with a pistol grip instead of a butt stock grip.
